Skull Games?

Whether you oppose the use of helmets and the laws requiring them or not, one thing is sure.  There are those in Government agencies that are determined to make it mandatory that you protect your jug. The DOT, in an attempt to clamp down on so-called “novelty helmets” that don’t meet the Departments criteria just passed a law on May 13– effective immediately– which requires helmets to clearly display a label indicating compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218. While you may not be familiar with this little number 218, it does set guidelines for a helmet’s energy attenuation, penetration resistance, and retention system structure, among other things. According to NHTSA, a helmet that meets such requirements cuts the risk of dying in a motorcycle crash by 37 percent. By reducing the number of dubiously constructed helmets on the road from the 5.2 million lids sold annually, the U.S. government estimates that between 22 and 75 lives could be saved.  Granted the Government can’t make a law against stupidity (or can they), a fair majority of accidents are rider error (aka doing wheelies, speeding, driving beyond skill levels, etc), but another law to protect us? Question we have to ask: Is this the best use of time and money when we’re in a crisis economically? Isn’t there more important things to consider like terrorism and housing market?  Unemployment?  Are there people just trying to make “busy work” so they can justify their jobs? What do you think?
